RUSSIAN MUSEUM
The dream for this museum began with Alexander III, and came to fruition through Nicholas II, with an official opening in 1898. The collection of work in this museum, is the finest examples of Russian art to be found anywhere. The collections span styles from medieval icons to Social Realist paintings containing within them, the history of Russia from it's infancy. Because the majority of the works are regularly on loan to generate revenue, many ordinary Russians have never seen these magnificent works of beauty.
The museum is situated just off Nevskiy Prospekt, behind the hotel Europa, and is open from 10am to 6pm, except on Tuesdays. The ticket office is located within the main gates in the basement.
